What to check
- Which court imposed the fine or financial order.
- Whether the person knew about the proceedings and whether a statutory declaration or reopening route may be relevant.
- The amount ordered, payments made and enforcement fees added.
- Whether the visitor is an Approved Enforcement Agent, civilian enforcement officer or another officer.
- Whether there is a warrant of control, arrest warrant or another authority.
Do not rely on civil-debt slogans
GOV.UK identifies unpaid criminal fines as a category in which force may be available as a last resort. Advice that is suitable for an ordinary civil debt may therefore be dangerously incomplete. Contact the court and obtain urgent individual advice where entry, arrest or committal is asserted.
