Bailiff and enforcement-agent frequently asked questions
This guide concerns England and Wales. Bailiff is common language; the legally relevant officer may be a certificated agent, HCEO, County Court bailiff or court-fine enforcement officer.
For action begun on or after 1 May 2026, ordinary notice is at least 14 clear days. A debt advice provider may request a minimum 28-day period for a qualifying non-business debt. A court can permit shorter notice.
Entry, vehicle control, exemptions, fees, vulnerability and remedies depend on the debt and facts. Do not tamper with a clamp or use force. Check identity and authority, preserve evidence and use the specific complaint or court procedure that applies.
