Bailiff rules and safeguards for vulnerable people
Vulnerability does not automatically cancel the debt, but it can materially affect how enforcement must be conducted. An agent must not take control of goods where a child or vulnerable person is the only person present.
Tell both creditor and enforcement company in writing, explain the practical effect, request a specific adjustment and provide proportionate evidence where available.
From 1 May 2026 a debt advice provider can request a minimum 28-day notice period for a qualifying non-business debt. Fee protections also apply in defined circumstances, but neither a notice nor a complaint automatically suspends enforcement.
